Baby Showers in the Pinterest Age

As someone with about 25 baby showers this year (just kidding – it’s ONLY about 6… so far… before June), I find it more and more difficult to come up with baby shower gift ideas. Pinterest, while usually my go-to for inspiration, is the devil on this subject. The variations on diaper cakes alone give me nightmares. Gone is the traditional diaper tower that looks like a tiered cake. Now you can make diaper motorcycles, diaper baby carriages, diaper Eiffel towers… Okay, maybe I went a little overboard on the last one, but the first two are real things. Look them up if you don’t believe me. Better yet, look right here:

I think it’s wonderful that there are people out there who are creative enough to come up with such adorable designs. It’s even more wonderful that there are people who realize how creatively challenged the rest of us can be and give you step by step instructions (with pictures, no less!) on how to recreate their ingenuity. I just feel like it puts a lot of pressure on the would-be gifter to go above and beyond to create the cutest gift packaging. It also forces you to spend more money on random accessories than actual gifts. I’m sorry. Straight pins, ribbons, safety pins, double sided tape, bows, rubber bands, and the like add up, especially when they’re all for the same item. I don’t know about you, but I budget out how much I plan to spend per gift. I usually end up going a little over, but I still try to stay within a certain range. These items put me way over that range.

It also puts pressure on those planning the baby shower itself. It’s not enough anymore to have a get together with good food, a bunch of awkward people who are rarely in the same place at the same time, and the woman of honor. Now you need to have 10 different and unique games – games no one has ever heard of, let alone actually played before. This means you also need creatively wrapped prizes for the winners of these games. These things add up, people!

As someone who will be attending multiple baby showers this year, I feel the need to let those inviting me know that I will do all I possibly can to put as much thought and love into your gift. That being said, I’m working two jobs, writing this blog, taking care of a 6-year old and my household, and i, myself, am growing a person. You’re probably not going to be getting a Pinterest creation from me this year.

As someone who is also having a baby shower of her own, I feel the need to tell my close family and friends who are reading this, Please, don’t go so crazy wrapping gifts that you stop being excited about the gift itself. I would much rather gifts that were sloppily thrown into a gift bag with love than a big elaborate diaper whatever that you stabbed yourself 10 times on and cursed the gift, the Pinterest gods, and me multiple times over. While I don’t like being the center of attention, I am truly excited about having so many people that I care about and who care about me in one place all getting to know each other and celebrating our new addition. That’s it. Nice and simple. Let’s keep the party about what it’s supposed to be about and not let the Pinterest gods win this one.

That’s all I’ve got for tonight. Join me again tomorrow to see what randomness spews from my fingers onto the page. LOL. Goodnight!
